Japan's expansionist aims and militaristic zeal matched that of Germany. Having annexed Manchuria in 1931 and invaded China in 1937, Japan sought to gain dominion over Southeast Asia.
America's military presence at Pearl Harbor was a clear threat, and following the infamous attack of December 1941, Japanese forces advanced into Malaya, the Philippines, Thailand, Borneo and Burma. Britain surrendered Hong Kong and her power base in the Far East, Singapore.
