Book Description

Someone who was once close to Reacher's brother, needs help in her new job. Her new job? Saving the Vice President of the United States from being assassinated.

We all know Jack Reacher is a loner, a drifter, the man who walks alone. But with every book, he finds himself in a new, often dangerous environment, where his native cunning, surly charm and brute strength help him to be quickly accepted as an insider, the only man who can save the day.

In Without Fail, the secretive, closed organisation that invites him in is the Secret Service, the organisation that protects the Presidency. Another brilliantly plotted, violent, romantic and utterly nail-biting thriller from the growing star on our list, Lee Child.

Fans of Lee Child's crisp style of writing will welcome this mission for maverick hero Jack Reacher. A brutal assassin team has the Vice-President of the United States in their sights and the Secret Service, worried that it could be an inside job, need an outsider to track them down. Reacher has to navigate between FBI, the police and the Secret Service, all of whom are desperate to show that the rogue agents could not be theirs. Most desperate is Froelich, whose job it is to protect the Vice-President and who was once the lover of Jack's dead brother Joe, another Secret Service agent. Neagley, one of Reacher's former colleagues, joins him in this race against time. Jack Reacher is an interesting man to follow: physically strong, technically excellent, logical and with instincts honed through experience, he is unexpectedly kind and compassionate. Froelich is needy and still in love with Joe, and her developing relationship with Jack adds to the drama. This thriller would transfer well to the big screen and Child's skill is such that his readers can enjoy both the atmosphere of a cinematic drama and a considered insight into some complex and sympathetic characters. (Kirkus UK)

Jack Reacher walks alone. No job, no ID, no last known address. But he never turns down a plea for help. Now a woman tracks him down, because she needs a break with her new job. Her task? Protecting the Vice President of the United States. From someone threatening to kill him. And so Reacher, with nothing but his toothbrush and the clothes he stands up in, enters a very exclusive club at the very heart of Washington power: the offices of the United States Secret Service. Here he must literally put himself in the line of fire, pitting his native cunning, surly charm and instinctive but controlled violence against the wiliness of bureaucrats and the ghosts from his own past - as well as the brutal ruthlessness of the mystery assassin. Without Fail is Lee Child's sixth thriller, another brillantly plotted, romantic and nail-bitingly exciting story featuring Jack Reacher, a hero whose toughness, coolness, and sheer animal magnetism just grow more irresistible with every book.

    Lee Child

Lee Child was born in 1954 in Coventry, England, but spent his formative years in the nearby city of Birmingham. By coincidence he won a scholarship to the same high school that JRR Tolkien had attended. He went to law school in Sheffield, England, and after part-time work in the theatre he joined Granada Television in Manchester for what turned out to be an eighteen-year career as a presentation director during British TV's "golden age." During his tenure his company made Brideshead Revisited, The Jewel in the Crown, Prime Suspect, and Cracker.

But he was fired in 1995 at the age of 40 as a result of corporate restructuring. Always a voracious reader, he decided to see an opportunity where others might have seen a crisis and bought six dollars' worth of paper and pencils and sat down to write a book, Killing Floor, the first in the Jack Reacher series. Killing Floor was an immediate success and launched the series which has grown in sales and impact with every new instalment.

Lee has three homes - an apartment in Manhattan, a country house in the south of France, and whatever air-plane cabin he happens to be in while travelling between the two. In the US he drives a supercharged Jaguar, which was built in Jaguar's Browns Lane plant, thirty yards from the hospital in which he was born.

Lee spends his spare time reading, listening to music, and watching the Yankees, Aston Villa, or Marseilles soccer. He is married with a grown-up daughter. He is tall and slim, despite an appalling diet and a refusal to exercise.
