Today's woman is self-reliat and independent, an earner and a provider. She might be divorced and bringing up children as a single mother. Or she's a widow, required to learn quickly how to live on her own after the death of a spouse. In Why Women Shouldn't Marry, Cynthia and Hillary Smith show how women have been driven into marriage by fears of their own inadequacies for centuries. They've been taught that they can't take care of themselves and need strong men to lean on. But the Smith's interviews and research reveal what a lie that is. In reality, women alone cope better thaqn men, and with today's woman climbing higher up the economic ladder, men aren't necessary for financial security. It is time that women see themselves for the strong, happy people they can be. These examples of self-reliant, single women will act as an inspiratipn for any woman on the brink of giving up her independence for the elusive security that a marriage license has always promised - but hasn't always provided. Ocer the years, Cynthia has continued to receive letters from grateful readers of the 1988 edition of Why Women Shouldn't Marry. Twenty years later, a new, updated edition seemed to be called for. It was felt that a cross-generational perspective should be included - so Cynthia asked her daughter, Hillary B. Smith, to co-author. Both authors are single: Cynthia is a widow and Hillary is divorced. AUTHOR: Hillary B. Smith was a corporate attorney in new York City for many years. In recent years, she has pursued a career as an early childhood educator. She is a single mother raising a teenage son. Cynthia Smith is the author of twelve books, has been on many talk shows including OPRAH, lectured at 72 universities, and was an Associated Adjunct Professor at New York University and on the faculty on the University of Connecticut. They live twenty minutes away from each other in Florida.
