It’s 1854 and John Leary has it made with Clarissa his expectant attractive wife and a growing building company. On his return from abroad to gold rush mad Sydney, a fatal site accident confronts him, threatening all he’s got.

Underhand and ruthless, he keeps his company alive from the accident’s fallout while sparring with his mother–in-law, a constant thorn in his side.

Stonemason Gerry Riordan tracks Leary’s battles and discovers a startling link to the young ambitious builder, one that will see their lives intertwine. Gruelling hard work partners John’s arrogance testing his relationships with friends and in laws. He meets an old flame Beth and passions are stirred while competitors and the banks attack him. They want him stopped because he’s growing too fast, too soon. He fights back –tough and hard, breaking the law when he has to and jeopardising his marriage and his new born.

Leary fights on, now unshackled from his in laws’ money. But his mother-in-law strikes, grabbing the prize he holds so tightly then John finds out too late that another possession is also torn from him, one that he’d taken for granted so long…

About the Author

Michael Beashel was born in Sydney to Irish forebears who immigrated to NSW in the 1860s. Raised in Bondi and educated in the eastern suburbs, he fell for a girl from Sydney's inner west and twenty five years later still lives there with her and their two grown up children. The building industry, rather than the family's sailing fame, has filled most of his working life both in Australia and abroad providing a source of rich material to background his writing. He has passion for old Sydney and a love of construction.

      Comments about Unshackled:

This one i had half practically given up, bought only on a slim possibility of chance so i was quite surprised when i had just started wondering what on earth am 'I' reading that it started to built some compelling pace that got me eager to going back to it.
All was quite engaging until the usual 2/3 mark where most writers seem to get either jittery about tying up the end or having to fill in pages and start to throw in a lot small pointless chit-chat and a point i scan and skip pages looking for a redeeming ending.
This one had an unexpected twist from where it initially appeared to be leading and it shaped the ending on a more realistic level rescuing it from a predictable mushy one .
There was also a part of the book i am highly convinced was handled entirely by a female helper as a similar part of it is handled distinctly differently by the male author.
I will not spoil it and shall leave it to the reader to detect it as another part of the intrigue.
All in all an engaging read for the most part of it and if a choice of 1)Recommend - 2)Certainly Recommend - 3)Highly Recommend - 4)Absolutely Recommend - 5)Do Not Miss Recommend, i would 2)Recommend

Great story. Anybody who has an interest in early Sydney town would like this story. Good characters and an intersting plot. Recommend.

Starts really well and gives good insight on how one incident can change someones life (and not in a good way).
