Transition documents the changes IBM has initiated in this country to make it internationally competitive in IT services exports from Australia. It examines the changes that have occurred in the marketplace over the past decade, the effect these changes had on IBM's competitiveness, the responses to these changes from IBM and how they were made, the results of these changes and assessment of the current state of the marketplace concluding with some comments on what the future may hold.
From an Australian perspective this project leads to a higher level of enthusiasm and support for trying to improve Australia's standing in the international IT services market which will have a positive impact on policy positions taken by government, and or investment decisions taken by companies in the Australian marketplace for the future.
About the Author
It is fitting that John Harvey should pen this fascinating book about IBM's journey from being Australia's leading exporter of elaborately transformed manufactured goods in the mid 1990s to becoming Australia's leading IT services exporter a decade later. For when he joined IBM in 1968, Harvey's first training course was to be the last the company ever held in Australia on the hard wiring of an electronic tabulating machine. This transition from punch card machines to stored memory computers was the first of many evolutions the author would witness at IBM in a distinguished career in the IT industry which has spanned more than 40 years. During that time, Harvey has forged his deserved reputation as one of the leading advocates of IT in Australia.
