          Comments about Top Stocks 2014:

As investors we're arguably faced with 'information overload' now, with so much data available and such a large number of companies listed on the Australian Stock Exchange, so we can get overwhelmed in the search for good stocks to buy.

This is where this book comes in.

It gives us a 'shortlist' of 98 of Martin Roth's choice of top stocks based on a bunch of criteria that include dividends, return on equity, profitability and so on. Sure, you could find this information online via your share buying platform but are you seriously going to read all of the data on all the listed companies to narrow down your list? If you answer yes to that, then good luck to you.

So the strength of this book then, is that it only talks about the ones that fulfill Roth's criteria. I've used previous editions of this book to find some absolute gems that I probably would have otherwise missed.

In other words, it's like being given a shortlist, from which you can narrow down your search for good stocks even further, based on your own criteria.

So you will still have to do your own follow-up research. For example, even the best stock can be a poor investment if you pay too much for it, and that can happen if its share price has shot up too high in recent weeks. This is where your online (up-to-date) share buying platform can be extremely valuable.

This book then, does not replace the information available online and in fact works best when used with it. But it gives you a marvellous starting point in narrowing down your search for your own group of top stocks.
