'Never forget, plants want to live. They will work with you!' 'This book is about igniting the skills and knowledge you already have but may not realise.' Millie Ross, The Thrifty Gardener

In this book, based on Millie Ross' popular GARDENING AUSTRALIA MAGAZINE's column, she shares with us her enthusiasm and excitement when it comes to growing green things. An advocate for simply getting in there and having a go, Millie encourages you, whether novice or experienced gardener, to develop a fresh new take on gardening, trust your instincts, take a few risks and build the garden of your dreams, even if you are on a tight budget.

Packed with groovy, chic garden projects, from beehives to outdoor showers, edible cubby houses to bedspring frames for climbers, all made from repurposed materials, THE THRIFTY GARDENER aims to make gardening accessible to everyone.

Whether you own a tiny courtyard or a massive suburban tract, Millie will show you how to use garden wisdom to:

Assess your site, microclimate and soil conditions and make a plan

Develop a design style, from industrial oasis to nanna chic, a renters 'mobile' garden to edible ornamentals

Build paths, fences, walls, fireplaces, ponds and other structures

Grow plants in raised and self-watering beds, hydroponically, and in containers and pots

Make planting schemes for all kinds of plants - indoor and outdoor, shade and sun, native and exotic - and produce plants from seeds and cuttings or by propagation, pollination and grafting

Maintain, irrigate, feed, prune, mulch, compost and weed your garden and eliminate pests

Grow a successful fruit, vegetable and herb garden for next to nothing.

'It might be counter-productive to tell you this from the start, but I don't really believe in rules, particularly when it comes to building a garden. Experiment, play, plant, cut, kill, compost, dig and every now and then, push your luck. There is no better way to work it out than by doing it yourself.'

As someone who is establishing their own garden & has been to many workshops on gardening, this book is fabulous, inspiring and informative. I was given this book as a gift (and many other garden books) & Milie's is the one I keep going back to. Its for people who like reusing things and understanding gardens - its not for your person who likes lots of concrete, formal gardens and plastic grass etc.

                Comments about Thrifty Gardener:

I felt like this book wasn't very informative. Bit of a coffee table book, gimmicky and geared towards duping people into buying it as a Christmas gift when anyone could get all of this information from the Internet without outlaying any cash, which would be a really thrifty move.
