When a peculiar advertisement appears in the newspaper for children to take part in a secret mission, children everywhere sit a series of mysterious tests. In the end, just four children succeed: Reynie, Kate, Sticky and Constance.
They have three things in common: they are all honest, all remarkably talented and all orphans. They must go undercover at the Learning Institute for the Very Enlightened where the only rule is that there are no rules. There they must work as a team to save not only themselves, but also the world outside the walls.
"Are you a Gifted child looking for Special Opportunities?" Would you answer that add if you saw it in a newspaper? Hundreds of kids write in and are called in to go through round after round of testing. When the best of the best have been selected, four children remain - Reynie, Kate, Sticky and Constance. They are called in to meet the mysterious Mr. Benedict who enlists them to help him prevent 'The Thing That Is Coming' (you want mystery? You've got mystery!)... They must go under cover at the Learning Institute for the Very Enlightened (L.I.V.E.) which is run by the evil Mr. Curtain, and somehow stop the Thing That Is Coming. Luckily, all four children are exceptionally talented and in possession of a wide variety of skills including (but not limited to): a photographic memory (Sticky), super-human agility (Kate), whimsical poetry writing skills (Constance) and being so average looking that people often think you are someone else (Reynie).
This series has taken off in a massive way this year - you do not want these books to pass you by... a gripping holiday read if I ever saw one!
