This is the Australian edition of this book. It has 10,000 more words than the US edition. We are unclear why the Americans wanted to remove 10,000 words from the author's original manuscript. Perhaps they felt the phrase, "Have A Nice Day" made up for the rest. I know, that's cheeky! But we do recommend this original manuscript, not only does it have the extra content but it also comes in a large format paperback book with flaps, so it is sturdy and has a better quality finish to its printing.

What if almost everything we believed about finding happiness turned out to be inaccurate, misleading, or false? And what if those very beliefs were making us miserable? What if our efforts to find happiness were actually preventing it?

A growing body of scientific research suggests that we are all caught in a powerful psychological trap: a vicious cycle, whereby the more we strive for happiness, the more we suffer. This book provides an escape from "the happiness trap", via a revolutionary new development in human psychology: a powerful model for change, known as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).

ACT helps people to create a rich, full and meaningful life, whilst effectively handling the pain that inevitably comes with it. It has been clinically proven to be highly effective in a wide range of psychological disorders, ranging from depression and anxiety to drug addiction and schizophrenia.

This book shows you how to apply ACT in your own life to increase self-awareness, develop emotional intelligence, enhance relationships, create a sense of meaning and purpose, access a transcendent sense of self, and fundamentally transform painful thoughts and feelings so they have much less impact and influence over your life.

About the Author

Dr Russ Harris was born in Liverpool, England. After graduating in medicine from the University of Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, he emigrated to Australia. As a family doctor, he became increasingly interested in the psychological aspects of medical illness (and increasingly less interested in writing prescriptions). In his eclectic career, he has been a stand-up comedian, sex therapist, filmmaker, novelist (as-yet-unpublished!), and workshop presenter. He now practices as a psychological health physician in Melbourne.

Comments about The Happiness Trap : Stop Struggling, Start Living:

This is an amazing book, which includes practical examples and exercises to understand and accept your fear and anxiety and get out there and lead a fulfilling values based life. It's so simple, it's amazing that so many of us are not already aware of these techniques. I wish that everyone in the world could read it. I love the stories demonstrating the practical applications, and I love the fact that the writer shares his experiences with ACT as well. This book has so inspired me, that I intend to do further study in ACT so that I may inspire others.

Comments about The Happiness Trap : Stop Struggling, Start Living:

I've been treated for mental illness for 4 years before coming across this approach whilst hospitalised. The previous approaches I've been treated with only helped so much. This approach, called acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) helps you to move on with your life regardless of whether you are "better" or not. It helps you to get on with your life despite your illness. Recommend it to anyone who wants help with anxiety/depression/PTSD etc.

Comments about The Happiness Trap : Stop Struggling, Start Living:

This book is original in that it explains why happiness is an elusive state, and that the more we try to chase happiness, the more dissatisfied we are. It provides tools and strategies to help understand, accept and embrace the world as it is. It teaches that in order to have a full, rich, and satifying life, we must experience and accept the whole range of human emotions. The idea that feeling ecstactic all of the time is damaging and unrealistic.
