‘I believe that on the first night I went to Gatsby’s house I was one of the few guests who had actually been invited. People were not invited - they went there’.

Considered one of the all-time great American works of fiction, Fitzgerald’s glorious yet ultimately tragic social satire on the Jazz Age encapsulates the exuberance, energy and decadence of an era.

After the war, the mysterious Jay Gatsby, a self-made millionaire pursues wealth, riches and the lady he lost to another man with stoic determination. He buys a mansion across from her house and throws lavish parties to try and entice her. When Gatsby finally does reunite with Daisy Buchanan, tragic events are set in motion.

Told through the eyes of his detached and omnipresent neighbour and friend, Nick Carraway, Fitzgerald’s succinct and powerful prose hints at the destruction and tragedy that awaits.

About the Author

Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald was an American writer of novels and short stories, whose works have been seen as evocative of the Jazz Age, a term he himself allegedly coined. He is regarded as one of the greatest twentieth century writers. Fitzgerald was of the self-styled "Lost Generation," Americans born in the 1890s who came of age during World War I. He finished four novels, left a fifth unfinished, and wrote dozens of short stories that treat themes of youth, despair, and age.

      Comments about The Great Gatsby:

Scott Fitzgerald writes with elegance and his metaphors are just beautiful. The story is simple but the prose makes it very readable.

I suggest you see the two latest movies and compare with the book. I preferred the Robert Redford version (sorry Leonardo) but a good story.

          Comments about The Great Gatsby:

Because of the publicity given to the upcoming film I wished to read the original work.
Maybe it does deal with the social scene and its greed in the 1920s, but I found it to be trite and with little or no substance in the characters I was disappointed totally
