Is it possible to eat what you like, most of the time, and get thinner and healthier as you do it? Simple answer: yes.

By simply quartering your calorie intake on two non-consecutive days each week (500 calories for women, 600 for men), you'll lose weight quickly and easily -and the joy of the Fast Diet is that the side-effects are all good.

The science is indisputable: intermittent fasting takes your body out of 'go-go' mode and puts it into survival mode. This causes the body to slow production of new cells and instead repair old ones. You not only lose weight, you reduce your risk of a range of diseases, from diabetes, asthma and arthritis to cardiovascular disease and even cancer. You also slow the ageing process and boost your brain.

This book brings together the results of recent revolutionary research to create a dietary programme that anyone can incorporate into their normal working life. It also includes more than 40 'Fast 500' and '600' recipes by The Times nutritionist Sarah Marber.

Far from being just another 'fad', The Fast Diet is a lifestyle choice which doctors are actually recommending for general health. This is your indispensible guide to making the kilograms fly off, while eating all the foods you love.

Read Caroline Baum's Review

As someone who is following this method I am only too happy to endorse fasting as more than a fad. The health benefits go beyond weight loss (new brain cells, everybody!) and once you establish a routine, it's easy to stick to without getting bored.

If you are jaded about weight loss programs you may find this suits you. It is, despite what you might think, less punitive than other techniques and a manageable, steady way to work towards a specific goal ie a wedding or holiday as well as a long term program to change your habits.

I went into this book with an open mind and was pleasantly surprised. The 5:2 approach is explained clearly and thoughtfully. The recipe section provided me with some simple and practical ideas and I am now thinking of purchasing the separate recipe book.

It presents a good alternative for people that have found traditional restrictive diets difficult to follow.

The only criticism I have is that I would have liked a more detailed and technical relation of the science involved as the overview provided was quite interesting but brief.

I did not find the book very useful because it followed the television show so closely.

I have read this book twice. The first time gave me the idea of how it worked. Then I started the diet and it didn't quite work for me how I was doing it. So I went back, read it again and discovered another way for me to do it so that it worked for me. I found this diet great because it is so versatile and it is up to you to make it fit around your life.

I have been on the fasting diet for 3 weeks, (in other words I have fasted a total of 6 days), and so far I have lost 2 kg and lost 3.5 inches from around my waist. I have found the fasting diet easy to do. The first day or maybe even the second time I had headaches ,but since then, it's easy.
