During six precarious weeks as an undercover cherry picker, Detective Brogden hunts a ruthless wanted criminal, enjoys the company of young Scandinavian backpackers and becomes involved in a torrid affair. Under immense pressure from his superiors, the detective is soon on the verge of collapse.

Brogden is inadvertently drawn into the web of dysfunctional and sometimes murderous relationships within the family who own the orchard. The disappearance of his lover, the mysterious whereabouts of her confidante in Sydney, together with the constant anxiety of a hostage situation brings matters to an exciting climax.

The physical and mental aftermath of his experiences at the orchard reshapes the young detective’s perspective on life and changes those closest to him.
