Booktopia Comments

Lush and Fleming's first book of 2005 was an instant bestseller and this follow up edition promises no less. They start with a list of ingredients and where to buy them, before launching into a chapter-by-chapter exploration of the house and how to tackle any problems that may arise in each room of it. This edition now has an all new chapter: Clothing and Shoes, tackling yoghurt on cotton, toothpaste on wool, preventing piling and cleaning suede. Lush and Fleming, who conduct weekly appearances on national talk-back radio, have taken the approach in this edition to answer as many of their listeners' questions as they can, using as practical methods as they can think of. Sometimes their approaches are very innovative, making use of tea bags, banana peels and dental floss in ways you would have never imagined, but the results are undeniable.

Comments about Spotless 2 : More Stains And Solutions To Domestic Disasters:

I'm a Shannon Lush 'junkie'. Her knowledge of cleaning stuff, like red wine stains on your white carpet or on the Armani dress you borrowed from your girlfriend (along with the 'cross your heart' promise to look after it), to removing bird droppings from your fave T-shirt (did you know that there are at least 5 different colours of bird poo, and each one requires a different removal treatment?) is astonishing.
Here you'll find how to use common items like unprocessed wheat bran to clean fabrics and furs, tea tree oil to remove glues and chewing gum, pantyhose as a mild abrasive, how to remove odours from your microwave and elsewhere, and many other money-saving tips.
Thanks to Shannon, my cupboard is full of bottles of white vinegar and boxes of Carb Soda for many cleaning tasks (instead of using expensive and often toxic cleaners), sometimes using her clever 'two sponge technique'; things like Glycerine, for tannin stains; Oil of Cloves to inhibit mould and silverfish, and Sweet Almond oil to spray on your shirt so you don't have to iron it. These things are explained in her books, which are set out in a sensible 'room by room' method. So, instead of reaching for hot water (which makes some things harder to remove), or just soaking in cold water, or a spray bottle of expensive cleaner, reach for Shannon's books. They can save you a lot of heartache (not to mention a lot of money!)
The seven page 'Quick stain removal guide for fabrics' in Spotless 2 (page 298) will probably save you the price of the book the first time you use it!

      Shannon Lush

It all began back on ABC local radio. Shannon Lush the listener used to call in regularly with advice for other listeners who had nasty stains or spills or broken bits or bobs in their homes. She was so informative that she eventually became a regular expert guest on the show.

Shannon knows how to clean or fix virtually anything. She can clearly explain how to unshrink a woollen jumper or rescue the black charred frying pan you were about to throw away. She can identify mysterious moulds and marks, bizarre blots and spots. This led to her first book, Spotless, co-written with Jennifer Fleming, which sold over 650,000 copies and is now a household bible.

Shannon is an artist and fine arts restorer who works in 27 different mediums. She has a passion for old-fashioned chemistry and loves testing handy hints, always avoiding chemical laden products in favour of more traditional ingredients such as bi-carb soda, vinegar and lavender oil.

She has the ability to turn stain removal into fascinating science experiments: ink on your shirt? You need rotting milk. Toddler’s banana on your dress? A pair of wet pantyhose will work wonders. Her tips on everything, from how to organise your fridge to cleaning your house in 15 minutes come like an epiphany, opening up the possibility of a world with less stress and dysfunction and more harmony and calm. Shannon says that a properly organised home will make for a more harmonious life.

Her expertise on stain removal has turned her into an extraordinary phenomenon appealing equally to a male and female audience. Four more bestsellers followed Spotless, all co-written with her partner in grime, Jennifer Fleming: Speedcleaning, How to be Comfy, Save and Spotless 2.

If you think these publications are only about cleaning and stain removal – you’re wrong. They’re about teaching people new systems so they can run an efficient household themselves. Disorder and mess waste time and cause frustration and stress.

Shannon’s methods promise to free you up. Thanks to Shannon, you can stop dreaming of escaping to boutique hotels and tropical-island resorts… and make your own home a haven of domestic bliss. And you’ll be surprised how simple and fun it can be.

Shannon launches her television career with Lush House for The LifeStyle Channel. The 10-part series visits families in their homes to help them clean up and get organised.
