This book follows the development of a small urban garden in Fremantle, Western Australia. Illustrated with technical diagrams, sketches and before-and-after photos, Small Space Organics charts a process for creating innovative, sustainable and stylish ways to incorporate organic food production into urban residential landscapes. It includes the latest research and techniques for permaculture, water conservation and propagation, as well as step-by-step instructions on how to create your own urban organic food garden. Josh doesn't just tell; he shows, with detailed diagrams and step-by step photographed guides to jobs such as building an edible water garden, trellising a fruit tree and assembling a propagation frame. Water management is a big part of what he does, and there's plenty of detail on topics such as hydrozoningo your garden to manage water, and setting up greywater and drip-irrigation systems.

Comments about Small Space Organics:

Bought in England for daughter in Australia. Most impressed with Booktopia. Judging from photographs my daughter is getting a lot from the book. She also met the author at an open garden event.

    Comments about Small Space Organics:

Gardens are getting smaller and so the question of how to best use the available space taxes many a home occupier's mind. One approach to the problem is provided by Josh Byrne, a well-known ABC gardening presenter.

This book has 7 chapters - House, site and landscaping; water systems; food systems; garden habitat; soil building, plant nutrition and recycling; maintenance; and propagation. Each of the chapters has much of value to say.
For example on water systems there are well-illustrated explanations on installing a grey water system, rainwater harvesting, including installing an underground water tank and the installation, control and performance monitoring of a drip irrigation system. Food systems includes installing a raised veggie bed, planting herbs and fruit trees in pots as well as useful vegetable planting guide, herb planting guide , fruit tree cultivation guide and fruiting guide tables. There is very little on flower gardening as this is not its purpose
All in all, as Peter Cundall states, "it is an intensely practical, down to earth and inspiring book".
