Alison Lester has got to be one of my all time favourite picture book authors. If you've not heard of Magic Beach or The Journey Home then you'd better pick up your picture-book reading game because they are both amazing. She has done it again with this marvellous picture book about the harrowing journey of a girl and her horse.
Nina is a young girl who lives above the Royal Academy of Dancing Horses. Her father is the stable master there and she has always delighted in watching the beautiful white horses. Her favourite horse, however, is not one of the sleek Lipizzaners in the ring, but a cart horse named Zelda who she visits each day on her way home from school. When Nina and her father are forced to flee the city in search of safety, she is determined to bring all the horses including Zelda to safety. But a perilous journey is ahead of them... will Zelda be strong enough to make it?
Lester's distinctive pen and ink illustrations are combined with watercolours and photographs to create mixed-media illustrations that bring to life her story. Based on the rescue of the Lipizzaners from the Spanish Riding School in Vienna during World War Two, this is a story that will delight readers both young and old. While it is a picture book, there is enough text to keep older children entertained, as well as enchanting a younger audience.
Book Description
Ten-year-old Nina lives with her father above the palace stables at the Royal Academy of Dancing Horses. She loves watching the famous white stallions as they parade for the crowds, but her favourite horse is an ordinary mare called Zelda - an old cab horse Nina often pats on her way home from school.
When Nina's world changes dramatically, she and her father have to flee the city. Their journey over the mountains with Zelda and the stallions seems impossible, with danger at every turn...
