Founded in 1567 by Lawrence Sheriff, Grocer to Queen Elizabeth I, Rugby School grew to national fame under Dr Thomas Arnold in the early nineteenth-century as a model for progressive boarding school education, a model subsequently replicated throughout Britain and Empire. Rugby combines an illustrious past with a progressive spirit. Other famous names include the Doctor's fictional pupil Tom Brown, the legendary founder of rugby football William Webb Ellis, 'who with a fine disregard for the rules of football as played in his time first took the ball in his arms and ran with it', and literary luminaries like the poet Rupert Brooke and children's author Lewis Carroll.
