Bill Willingham is a writer and a cartoonist, most notably known for his Fables series of comics which are published by the famous DC imprint. The series deals with various characters from fairy tales and folklore who have been forced out of their homelands and are living in disguise in Fabletown, a small area of New York city. Willingham has a huge following, and every now and then he breaks out of the comic strip mode into a fully fledged novel format, and so it is with Peter and Max.
Peter and Max are brothers, Peter and Max Piper. They are pipers, and they find themselves locked in rivalry which all comes to a head in the medieval city of Hamlin. In the contemporary world, Peter is married to Bo (the daughter of Mr Peep) and a resolution with Max should also unlock for us the mystery of Peter and Bo's union.
Peter and Max will certainly please Willingham fans. For newcomers like myself, however, this novel provides an engrossinig entry point into a new world of fantasy and mystery as age-old stories are turned on their heads and folklore is given a new and very interesting twist.
Peter and Max also includes a short story "The Price of a Happy Ending", which proves to be the perfect conclusion. I am definitely up for more!
Leialoha has been the master illustrator on the entire Fables series, and this prize -winning duo prove once again why they are such an enduring combination.
