Book Description
"This fifth edition of the Macquarie, measuring a new awareness of environment and fragility, will mark a turning of the tide in our consciousness, in the span of our response, in the way we give voice to place - and place to voice." Her Excellency Ms Quentin Bryce, Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia.
Since the Macquarie Dictionary was first published in 1981, its reputation as Australia's national dictionary has gone from strength to strength. It is now nationally and internationally regarded as the standard reference on Australian English. A comprehensive and up-to-date account of our variety of English, it not only includes all those words and senses peculiar to Australian English, but also those common to the whole English-speaking world.

Comments about Macquarie Dictionary:
Having handled this hardback Fifth Edition in a bookstore, I am reluctantly opting for the Concise edition instead as gifts for my two adult sons. I agree with a previous reviewer that two volumes would have been better than one that is so big and heavy. I would recommend this full edition as long as the buyer is prepared to wrestle with the size.

Comments about Macquarie Dictionary:
Well, it's huge, and heavy, therefore tough to drag around in your briefcase! (I wonder how on earth the binding is secured, and hope it can survive time - will have to handle the book with some care!). Definitive however, and essential for serious writers and editors. There is good scientific content, for a general dictionary. I might have expected and appreciated some general essays on language etc, but I guess it was already too big to add anything further! Thank goodness anyway for the access to the online Macquarie that it also offers the buyer , a handy soft-copy option!

Comments about Macquarie Dictionary:
Great updated dictionary including software version. Only drawback to the hardcover edition is that it is large and heavy. Would have been better to have been split in two and issued as two pieces. Not nearly as easy to handle as the earlier editions.
