Account of the life of Jeanne van Diejen-Roemen, who lived in the Maluku Islands of Indonesia for almost 40 years.
Presented as a first-hand account by the subject and based on her memoirs. Relates the hardships of remote jungles, the horrors of two world wars including an internment by the Japanese, and the political upheavals that preceded the birth of the Republic of Indonesia.
During her difficult life she distinguished herself as a planter, army nurse, midwife, gardener and social worker. Author was born in Java and met van Diejen-Roemen when interned.
Meeting her again in 1974 in the Netherlands he persuaded her to publish her memoirs.
