Set in New York, this gorgeous picture book by Gus Gordon is a story about friendship, life in the big city, and following your dreams.

This is a tale about a big city.
It's a tale of hotdogs and music and the summertime subway breeze.
It's a tale of singing on rooftops and toffees that stick to your teeth.
But most of all, it's the tale of Herman and Rosie.

'Quirky, soulful and alive . . . a book to treasure, like a favourite song.' Markus Zusak

About the Author

Gus Gordon is an illustrator and author. He grew up on a farm in northern NSW and, after leaving school, worked on cattle stations all over Australia before deciding to pursue a drawing career. He moved to Sydney and studied at the Julian Ashton School of Art. Gus illustrated his first children's book in 1996 and has now illustrated and written over 70 books for children.

Gus's illustrations are known for their loose and energetic line work, mixed media and humour. His writing is always anthropomorphic – where animals take the place of humans in the narrative. He attributes this to his love of Kenneth Grahame's Wind in The Willows.

Gus's first picture book, Wendy, is about a motorcycle-riding stunt chicken and was selected as a Children's Book Council of Australia (CBCA) Notable Book in the 2010 Book of the Year Awards.

His new picture book is set in New York and is called Herman and Rosie.

Gus lives with his wife and three children on the Northern beaches of Sydney.

    Comments about Herman and Rosie:

Herman and Rosie reads like a tourist guide to New York! A wonderfully illustrated story about friendship in a big city and the synergies that others also might have yet you didn't even know. Every read I have done with class groups I have had them wanting more and totally absorbed in the narrative. The clever use of very subtle collage and big bright colours is appealing for all ages. I'm looking forward to retracing the steps that Herman and Rosie took before ending up in Central Park.

                  Comments about Herman and Rosie:

                  Read, re-read, re-read again.

Gus Gordon's illustrations are fabulous and so evocative of the streetscape of New York that readers can feel the heat from the subway grates. There's so much for kids to talk about, including the inside cover with the map of New York - it entices discussion of the landmarks and icons of New York.

Upon turning the pages the readers are brought into Herman and Rosie's world which is so vividly captured and forms a perfect backdrop to the characters. Two individuals in a sea of many, experiencing individual but shared life-stories and emotions.

The illustrations and the narrative fit like a hand in a glove.
