Ordering & Payment

How to place an order online

Follow the following instructions to place an online order

  1. Select the product you wish to purchase.
  2. Click on BUY NOW.
  3. If you wish to add more items, click on CONTINUE SHOPPING to continue to browse the site.
  4. When you are ready to complete your purchase, click on CHECKOUT.
  5. Login as an existing customer, or if this is your first time you will be asked to register your details to create your Booktopia Account.
  6. Select your Shipping Address, or if you wish to ship to another address, click on Ship to a different address, complete all the required fields and click SAVE.
  7. Click CONTINUE CHECKOUT to complete the Delivery Instructions. Before selecting Express Post you will need to check that your address is in Australia Post's Express Post Delivery Network.
  8. Click CONTINUE CHECKOUT for Payment and Review.
  9. Next review your order, check shipping details, if applicable enter and apply your promotion, gift certificate or store discount code and proceed to "Payment Information".
  10. Select your payment option. If paying by Credit Card complete the required information, acknowledge the Terms of Business and click CHECKOUT to submit your order. If paying by PayPal refer to the detailed section by clicking here.
  11. If you choose any of the other payment options (Cheque, Money Order, Fax or Bank Transfer), all relevant information on where to transfer, send or fax your payment will be provided after you have clicked on SUBMIT ORDER.
  12. Click SUBMIT ORDER to submit your order.

Please note: for any orders where the payment selection was a funds transfer or being mailed to Booktopia in the form of a cheque or money order then the order can not be processed until the monies have been received and the funds have been cleared in our account.

After you've placed your order

Once you have submitted an order via our website, we want to keep you informed of your order status as it makes its way through our dispatch process.

To do this, the following confirmation emails will be sent to the email address used to setup your account:

  1. Order Confirmation - includes order number and items purchased.
  2. If you have chosen a payment option other than Credit Card or PayPal you may receive a series of Payment Reminder Notices as we wait for monies to be received. (Please note that any orders where payment is required to be sent or transferred will not be processed until the monies have been received and the funds have been cleared in our account).
  3. Shipping Notification - advising that your parcel has been dispatched from our Distribution Centre and indicates what items are included.
  4. Tracking your parcel - Your Shipping Notification will also contain the Tracking Code for your parcel. For more information on how to track your parcel click here. You can also retrieve your Tracking Code from your Order History in My Account. Click here to sign in and retrieve your number.

Product Availability

Is the item I wish to purchase available?

When purchasing an item from our website, you can check the Stock Availability on the individual Product Information Page.

The classifications used are:

  1. "In Stock" - This item is in our Sydney Distribution Centre and is ready to pick. We aim to ship your order as quickly as possible but to allow for peak demands at different times of the year we will specify how many days we expect to ship your order in. Look for the 'In Stock' symbol and the advised shipping time. The Express Post option is only available for orders of 'In Stock' titles, and where Express Post is selected, Booktopia will ship those parcels on the next business day.
  2. "More Stock Arriving Soon" - This is a stocked item in our Sydney Distribution Centre and we have temporarily run out of stock and have ordered more from our supplier. Generally stock is about to arrive and will be allocated to the orders in the system so we recommend to place your order as soon as possible to ensure you do not miss out. Infrequently a title can be delayed in delivery due to reprinting at the publisher.
  3. "Not Available in our Warehouse and needs to be ordered". This is a non-stocked title and we will order it in from our publishers around Australia and in the USA and UK. The majority of non-stocked titles arrive within the week however it can take up to 2 to 3 weeks for uncommon titles.

The estimated dispatch time on the Product Information pages are supplied to Booktopia's website via a stock availability from our suppliers. Occasionally a supplier can give us incorrect information. If this happens we will update you as soon as we receive an update from the supplier.

If the stock level is unknown, you are welcome to call or contact us via our Message Centre with the ISBN of the book before you place your order so we can provide an estimate of the delivery time frame.

When the availability of a title is unknown but you would still like to order it, our Ordering System will request confirmation that you would like to proceed with the order. Our Ordering Team would have investigated all options to source the title and believe there is a high probability that we can source it for you. Even if you have contacted Booktopia to verify its availability you will still be required to log in and confirm that you wish to proceed. Your patience on this matter is appreciated as we do our best to try and source these hard-to-get titles.

Pre-Orders

Pre-order items mean they are not yet published or released but are available for you to purchase now. Most of the popular titles are already pre-ordered by Booktopia for stock and if you order one of these then your order will be allocated from this initial allotment. A pre-ordered item can only be dispatched to you on the item's publication or release date or shortly thereafter.

If items are not readily available our Order Processing Team will endeavour to contact you via the message centre or via 'Action Items' in your Booktopia account to discuss the delivery time frame for these items.

Gift Wrapping

Booktopia offers a gift-wrapping service. All items in your shopping cart will be included in gift-wrapping calculations and will be wrapped separately. The cost for gift-wrapping is $4.00 per item.

If you would like to have your gift sent directly to the recipient you can nominate a different shipping address to your billing address. As we cannot split an order, we can only nominate one gift recipient address for each order.

If would like to send multiple recipients gift wrapped items, you will need to submit a separate order for each recipient.

We do not currently have the facility to automatically include a message, however feel free to contact customer service to discuss any message you would like included.

Shipping Cost Australia

Postage costs $6.95 per order for parcel mail with tracking for anyone with an Australian delivery address.

Order as many items as you want and it is only $6.95 per order. If some items are in stock and others need to be ordered in or are Not Yet Published, then Booktopia may have to make multiple shipments. There is NO EXTRA COST to you, the customer, if Booktopia chooses to do this; the price you pay is still a flat fee of $6.95 even if we have to make multiple shipments. If you are overseas but delivering to an Australian address it is still only $6.95.

Booktopia uses the best quality packing material to protect items for the journey from Booktopia's distribution centre to its customers with the intention that they arrive in the same condition they left the Distribution Centre.

You may also select Express Post for only $14.95 per order to ensure your parcel arrives as quickly as possible. Express Post is available for In Stock items only for delivery to addresses in Australia however not all areas are covered by Australia Post's Express Post Delivery Network. Where your address is outside this network, Australia Post will use the fastest possible transport links, but it won't be covered by their "Next Day Guarantee".

To upgrade your order to Express Post, please call Customer Service Monday to Friday, 9:00am to 4:00pm AEST, to request Express Post and we can arrange to charge you for the extra delivery cost.

Note Booktopia will ship your Express Post parcel on the next business day.

New Zealand Shipping

Booktopia only ships internationally to New Zealand. International customers may still purchase on the site for delivery to an Australian or New Zealand address.

Booktopia uses a courier company from Australia and then once the parcel is in New Zealand we use NZ Post to deliver orders to New Zealand delivery addresses. There is a one off fee of $6.95 per order to ship to New Zealand. This the same deal that is on offer to our Australian customers. So if you have eight items on your order and three of them are in stock at Booktopia's Sydney Distribution Centre, you may receive those first, then you have may have two items that needed to be ordered in from our local or international publishers and they may be sent in a separate shipment as they can take a week or two to get to us. Then you may have three items that are not yet published and will be delivered to us in a month or so upon their release, and they may be delivered separately too. All of these shipments are charged as a one off flat fee of $6.95 no matter how many items you order and the number of shipments we may have to do to get your order completed.

Ordering Frequently Asked Questions

Can I place my order and pay over the telephone or at your office?

Yes, Booktopia's Customer Service team can assist you to place an order and pay over the phone. However the pricing displayed on our website is for orders submitted via the website only.

Orders placed by phone, fax, in person or by mail order which require hand processing by our Booktopia staff will be charged the full RRP prices quoted on the website, plus a $10 non-refundable administration fee.

If you simply wish to pay for an order you have submitted via the website using the non-immediate payment option, please contact us with your credit details and have your order number ready.

Once I have placed my order, can I change it?

Booktopia will only allow you to make changes to your order within 1 business day of the original order being placed. We are unable to combine multiple orders after the payment for the first order is processed. Please message us using the Message Centre or call Customer Service with the ISBN of the book that you would like to add to, or update, your order.

Can I change the Shipping Address for an existing order?

The Shipping Address of each individual order is entered during the check-out process.

If you wish to change or make a correction to the shipping address of an order that you have submitted you will need to contact our Customer Service Team by phone or via the Message Centre.

Depending on the status of the order in our dispatch process we will be able to advise you on what steps we can take to accommodate your request.

If you have already received the automated Shipment Notification email, then unfortunately it is too late to make any address changes.

Please telephone if you have not received a response within 24 hours of making your request.

Can I change my invoice billing address details for different orders on the same account?

Many customers place orders from the one email address for themselves and the companies, school or organisation that they work for. In doing so you can be invoiced personally or the company or organisation you represent. If you wish to place a new order and have a different Addressee and Billing Address on the Booktopia Invoice please follow the steps below:

  1. Place the required items in your Shopping Cart and press Checkout
  2. You will be presented with the Shipping Address and Billing Address screen.
  3. To change the Billing Address click Invoice to a Different Address where you will be prompted to enter the new details.
  4. Remember to press SAVE when completed.
Are customs duties and GST payable for New Zealand deliveries?

Orders over the value of AUD$270 being delivered to New Zealand will be liable for customs charges, taxes including GST and brokerage costs. In the event that an order is assessed for customs duties and taxes to be charged it will be held and our Customer Service Team will be in contact to advise on the required process.

These charges are the responsibility of the recipient and Booktopia will not reimburse customers for these import costs or provide a refund or credit for any order if a customer refuses to pay them or accept delivery. It also may not be possible to return the goods if payment is refused as they will become the property of NZ customs.

Accepted Payment Methods

Booktopia currently accepts cards: VISA, MasterCard, AMEX, and VISA Debit. We also accept PayPal (Click here for more detailed information on how to pay with PayPal).

For Australian Customers, other payment methods we accept include cheque, money order, Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) and direct deposit. For other payment methods for customers ordering in New Zealand please contact our Customer Service Team.

All of the payment methods mentioned are available for selection during the online checkout process.

All prices are listed in Australian dollars and are inclusive of GST.

Charging of Credit Cards

A credit card is only charged after the Booktopia order processing team has confirmed availability.

Items that are no longer available will be removed from the website and excluded from your processed order and therefore you will not be charged for them.

If any delays are discovered on a particular title at the time of processing, you will be contacted via the message centre or by an "Action Item" in your Booktopia account with details of the options available to you. If you agree to a longer delivery time, your credit card will be charged at the time of confirmation.

PayPal Payments

When you choose to pay with PayPal, you will be redirected to the PayPal login screen where you can either log into your existing PayPal account, or sign up as a new PayPal user.

You will then be asked to confirm your shipping address and payment details before submitting your order, and being returned to the Booktopia website to show your Booktopia Order confirmation number.

This process will pre-authorise your PayPal payment to Booktopia.

The authorisation line will appear in your PayPal account. There will be a second line once Booktopia has captured the funds from your account.

Booktopia is only able to access your PayPal account once. If a title on your order is found to be not readily available we will process any other titles on your order and capture the funds required to cover the readily available titles. The remaining amount will be returned to your PayPal account and you will be contacted via the message centre in your Booktopia account with the options available to you. If you reply stating that you are happy with an extended delay, Booktopia will send you a "Money Request" via your PayPal account. PayPal will send you an email informing you of this. You will need to login to your PayPal account to see the money request on your account page. All you need to do is click on the "Pay" button. Once we have received the funds from PayPal the title/s will be ordered.

PayPal transaction authorisations only last 30 days. If Booktopia has not captured your payment within this time, we will require another payment from you. You will be contacted if this is required.
