Can I find out the status of my order online or do I have to call?

Yes, you can log in to My Account and find out the status of your order. Once you have logged in just click on the order number you wish to check on and the following screen will give a status of each title and whether it has been shipped, waiting in the warehouse, still on its way from our supplier, not yet published, or any other appropriate status associated to it.

Can I contact someone and find out what is going on with my order?

Yes, of course you can. We have a Call Centre Team in our Sydney headquarters answering emails and phone calls every working day. When you are logged in to My Account and in the specific order in question you can use your Message Centre to correspond with our team and ask where the order is up to. Alternatively, our team are available to take phone calls from customers from 9 am to 4 pm each working day.

Gift Wrapping

Booktopia offers a gift-wrapping service. All items in your shopping cart will be included in gift-wrapping calculations and will be wrapped separately. The cost for gift-wrapping is $4.00 per item.

If you would like to have your gift sent directly to the recipient you can nominate a different shipping address to your billing address. As we cannot split an order, we can only nominate one gift recipient address for each order.

If would like to send multiple recipients gift wrapped items, you will need to submit a separate order for each recipient.

We do not currently have the facility to automatically include a message, however feel free to contact customer service to discuss any message you would like included.

Ordering Frequently Asked Questions

Can I place my order and pay over the telephone or at your office?

Yes, Booktopia's Customer Service team can assist you to place an order and pay over the phone. However the pricing displayed on our website is for orders submitted via the website only.

Orders placed by phone, fax, in person or by mail order which require hand processing by our Booktopia staff will be charged the full RRP prices quoted on the website, plus a $10 non-refundable administration fee.

If you simply wish to pay for an order you have submitted via the website using the non-immediate payment option, please contact us with your credit details and have your order number ready.

Once I have placed my order, can I change it?

Booktopia will only allow you to make changes to your order within 1 business day of the original order being placed. We are unable to combine multiple orders after the payment for the first order is processed. Please message us using the Message Centre or call Customer Service with the ISBN of the book that you would like to add to, or update, your order.

Can I change the Shipping Address for an existing order?

The Shipping Address of each individual order is entered during the check-out process.

If you wish to change or make a correction to the shipping address of an order that you have submitted you will need to contact our Customer Service Team by phone (see Contact Us) or via the Message Centre.

Depending on the status of the order in our dispatch process we will be able to advise you on what steps we can take to accommodate your request.

If you have already received the automated Shipment Notification email, then unfortunately it is too late to make any address changes.

Please telephone if you have not received a response within 24 hours of making your request.

Can I change my invoice billing address details for different orders on the same account?

Many customers place orders from the one email address for themselves and the companies, school or organisation that they work for. In doing so you can be invoiced personally or the company or organisation you represent. If you wish to place a new order and have a different Addressee and Billing Address on the Booktopia Invoice please follow the steps below:

  1. Place the required items in your Shopping Cart and press Checkout
  2. You will be presented with the Shipping Address and Billing Address screen.
  3. To change the Billing Address click Invoice to a Different Address where you will be prompted to enter the new details.
  4. Remember to press SAVE when completed.

Accepted Payment Methods

Booktopia currently accepts cards: VISA, MasterCard, AMEX, and VISA Debit. We also accept PayPal (Click here for more detailed information on how to pay with PayPal).

Other payment methods we accept include cheque, money order, Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) and direct deposit.

All of the payment methods mentioned are available for selection during the online checkout process.

Charging of Credit Cards

A credit card is only charged after the Booktopia order processing team has confirmed availability.

Items that are no longer available will be removed from the website and excluded from your processed order and therefore you will not be charged for them.

If any delays are discovered on a particular title at the time of processing, you will be contacted via the message centre or by an "Action Item" in your Booktopia account with details of the options available to you. If you agree to a longer delivery time, your credit card will be charged at the time of confirmation.

PayPal Payments

When you choose to pay with PayPal, you will be redirected to the PayPal login screen where you can either log into your existing PayPal account, or sign up as a new PayPal user.

You will then be asked to confirm your shipping address and payment details before submitting your order, and being returned to the Booktopia website to show your Booktopia Order confirmation number.

This process will pre-authorise your PayPal payment to Booktopia.

The authorisation line will appear in your PayPal account. There will be a second line once Booktopia has captured the funds from your account.

Booktopia is only able to access your PayPal account once. If a title on your order is found to be not readily available we will process any other titles on your order and capture the funds required to cover the readily available titles. The remaining amount will be returned to your PayPal account and you will be contacted via the message centre in your Booktopia account with the options available to you. If you reply stating that you are happy with an extended delay, Booktopia will send you a "Money Request" via your PayPal account. PayPal will send you an email informing you of this. You will need to login to your PayPal account to see the money request on your account page. All you need to do is click on the "Pay" button. Once we have received the funds from PayPal the title/s will be ordered.

PayPal transaction authorisations only last 30 days. If Booktopia has not captured your payment within this time, we will require another payment from you. You will be contacted if this is required.

Shipping Cost

Postage costs $6.50 per order for parcel mail with tracking for anyone with an Australian delivery address.

Order as many items as you want and it is only $6.50 per order. If some items are in stock and others need to be ordered in or are Not Yet Published, then Booktopia may have to make multiple shipments. There is NO EXTRA COST to you, the customer, if Booktopia chooses to do this; the price you pay is still a flat fee of $6.50 even if we have to make multiple shipments. If you are overseas but delivering to an Australian address it is still only $6.50.

Booktopia uses the best quality packing material to protect items for the journey from Booktopia's distribution centre to its customers with the intention that they arrive in the same condition they left the Distribution Centre.

You may also select Express Post for only $14.95 per order to ensure your parcel arrives as quickly as possible. Express Post is only available for addresses in Australia however not all areas are covered by Australia Post's Express Post Delivery Network. Where your address is outside this network, Australia Post will use the fastest possible transport links, but it won't be covered by their "Next Day Guarantee".

To upgrade your order to Express Post, please call Customer Service Monday to Friday, 9:00am to 4:00pm AEST, to request Express Post and we can arrange to charge you for the extra delivery cost.

Note Booktopia will ship your Express Post parcel on the next business day.

New Zealand Shipping

Booktopia only ships internationally to New Zealand. International customers may still purchase on the site for delivery to an Australian or New Zealand address.

Booktopia uses UPS and NZ Mail to deliver orders to New Zealand delivery addresses and you will be charged based on the number of items in your order and the location it will to be shipped to. After you have placed your order, please send a message via the message centre in your Booktopia account with the telephone number and email address of the recipient to prevent any delays to delivery.

Region 1st Item Cost per

New Zealand $30.50 $10.00 UPS / NZ Mail

Free Shipping Offers

From time-to-time Booktopia emails Free Shipping Offers to its customers. You cannot find these offers on our site and they are only available to existing Booktopia customers. You are permitted at the time to pass the code on to your friends and colleagues. They generally are on offer for a short period and much appreciated by our customers.

"Why don't we have free shipping all the time?"
A great question! Everybody who offers free shipping on their website has included the price of the shipping in each item. So if you would like to order 7 books, 3 DVDs and a calendar in one order then on any other website, 11 items multiplied by a few dollars for shipping equals $33. Whereas Booktopia's standard flat rate of $6.50 per order for as many items as you want works out to be a pretty good deal.

So when Booktopia sends you a Free Shipping Offer as an existing customer it truly is free of any shipping charges to you and Booktopia is picking up the tab.

Delivery Expectations

The Booktopia Shipping Notification email is your confirmation that your parcel has been dispatched from the Booktopia Distribution Centre. It also contains your Australia Post Tracking Number.

Pick Up

If you have selected Pick Up during the order process, you will receive a "Ready For Pick Up" email letting you know your order is ready for collection.

For our address and opening hours of our Lane Cove West Head Office, see Contact Us.

Click here to sign in to your account to check if your parcel is ready to be collected.

Delivery Instructions

For shipments within Australia, during the order process you can nominate if your item can be left at your delivery address without a signature. A free text of 100 characters is provided so you can enter specific delivery instructions. If you do not nominate this option, Australia Post will leave a notification card and you will also receive an email from Australia Post letting you know where your parcel is.

Please note deliveries of $80 in value will automatically require signature on receipt.

Tracking Your Parcel

If your shipping address is correct and you have not received your package or a notification card within an appropriate time frame, please login to your Booktopia Account to retrieve your Australia Post tracking number and check on http://austpost.com.au/track for a status update, or call Australia Post Customer Service on 13 13 18.

You can also find your tracking number in the Shipping Notification email for your order or in My Account. Click here to sign in and retrieve your number.

Lost Packages

If you have tracked and checked for your parcel and believe it to be lost, you will need to contact the Booktopia Customer Service team (see Contact Us) within fifteen days of dispatch in order for a store credit or refund (if applicable) to be issued.

If the package has the correct delivery information and has been deemed 'lost' after an Australia Post investigation, Booktopia will replace the items or issue a store credit if the replacement copies will not arrive in time. If Booktopia is unable to source a replacement copy due to the title no longer being available for whatever reason, a refund will be processed for the unavailable title and postage if applicable. You must contact Booktopia within six (6) weeks of dispatch, if your package has not arrived otherwise no store credit or refund (if applicable) will be available.

Mail Redirections

Please note that many of our Booktopia customers inform us that their Australia Post Redirections often do not work with packages. Booktopia will not be responsible for replacing goods or extra costs if a redirection has not been successful, or Australia Post has not followed the delivery instructions given. If you are moving, please contact Customer Service before you move to ensure a current order has the updated details to minimise delays.

Delivery Frequently Asked Questions

Are items dispatched together, or in separate packages?

To dispatch your order to you as quickly as possible we will first send the in-stock items from our Distribution Centre. We then consolidate all the other items on your order as we receive them into our Distribution Centre.

The maximum time we will hold a title in our warehouse waiting for the other titles to arrive is 6 days. Once 6 days have passed we will ship what we have at that time.

Can you offer a specific day for when delivery will be made?

Unfortunately not, as the majority of deliveries are handled by domestic postal services, we cannot offer a definitive time or date for when deliveries will be made.

Read Delivery Expectation times here.

Can you provide tracking numbers for packages?

Yes, our parcels are sent nationally via the Australia Post eParcel Service. International orders are trackable via either, UPS or FedEx. The Shipping Notification confirmation email contains your tracking number and it is also stored in your account.

See Tracking your Parcel for more details or click here to sign in to retrieve your tracking number

How will I know if my order is on its way to me?

Once your order has been dispatched from our Distribution Centre, you will receive a Shipping Notification confirmation email. The email contains your shipping number for the order. The number can entered at http://austpost.com.au/track where an update on your order delivery status is provided by Australia Post. Click here to see Delivery Expectations for timeframes. Click here to sign in to your account and retrieve your tracking number.

How long will my order take to get to me?

Dispatch times from the Booktopia Distribution Centre vary depending on where an item is located. If an item is in stock at our Lane Cove Distribution Centre then it will ship very quickly. If it needs to be sourced from an Australian or overseas publisher then it can take a week or even a bit longer depending on stock availability at the time. Once you have received the Shipping Notification confirmation email, refer to the Delivery Expectations section.

Please note that if your order is placed during a "sale" period, dispatch times for in stock items can be delayed due to increased volume of orders.

How do I know when to come and collect my order from Booktopia Head Office?

If you have selected Pick Up during the order process, you will receive a "Ready for Pick Up" email letting you know your order is ready for collection.

Please wait until you have received the notification before making the trip. We would not want you to make the trip to our Lane Cove - Sydney office only to be advised your order is not available to collect.

Click here to sign in and see if your order is ready for collection.

Product Availability

Is the item I wish to purchase available?

When purchasing an item from our website, you can check the Stock Availability on the individual Product Information Page.

The classifications used are:

  1. "In Stock" - This item is in our Sydney Distribution Centre and is ready to ship. Currently we have same day or next day shipping but to allow for peak demands we say it ships within 1-3 business days. The Express Post option is only available for orders of "In Stock" titles, and where Express Post is selected, Booktopia will ship those parcels on the next business day.
  2. "More Stock Arriving Soon" - This is a stocked item in our Sydney Distribution Centre and we have temporarily run out of stock and have ordered more from our supplier. Generally stock is about to arrive and will be allocated to the orders in the system so we recommend to place your order as soon as possible to ensure you do not miss out. Infrequently a title can be delayed in delivery due to reprinting at the publisher.
  3. "Not Available in our Warehouse and needs to be ordered". This is a non-stocked title and we will order it in from our publishers around Australia and in the USA and UK. The majority of non-stocked titles arrive within the week however it can take up to 2 to 3 weeks for uncommon titles.

The estimated dispatch time on the Product Information pages are supplied to Booktopia's website via a stock availability from our suppliers. Occasionally a supplier can give us incorrect information. If this happens we will update you as soon as we receive an update from the supplier.

If the stock level is unknown, you are welcome to call or contact us via our Message Centre with the ISBN of the book before you place your order so we can provide an estimate of the delivery time frame.

When the availability of a title is unknown but you would still like to order it, our Ordering System will request confirmation that you would like to proceed with the order. Our Ordering Team would have investigated all options to source the title and believe there is a high probability that we can source it for you. Even if you have contacted Booktopia to verify its availability you will still be required to log in and confirm that you wish to proceed. Your patience on this matter is appreciated as we do our best to try and source these hard-to-get titles.

Pre-Orders

Pre-order items mean they are not yet published or released but are available for you to purchase now. Most of the popular titles are already pre-ordered by Booktopia for stock and if you order one of these then your order will be allocated from this initial allotment. A pre-ordered item can only be dispatched to you on the item's publication or release date or shortly thereafter.

If items are not readily available our Order Processing Team will endeavour to contact you via the message centre or via 'Action Items' in your Booktopia account to discuss the delivery time frame for these items.

Cancellations

After you place your order we will research where best to source the title(s). You will receive an email requesting you Sign In to your account to view the delivery expectations for your order.

You have a "1 business day cooling off period" to cancel your order if the delivery times are not suitable or you have changed your mind, to receive a full refund. After 1 business day all orders are a firm sale.

If the expected delivery times are too long, (eg. for a birthday present), then please discuss your requirements with Booktopia staff before cancelling as we may be able to fast track your order.

You must call Booktopia Customer Service on 02 9954 1080, Monday to Friday, 9:00am to 4:00pm AEST to cancel within 1 business day for a full refund.

If you do not contact Booktopia by phone within the "1 business day cooling off period" you will be entitled to a store credit only if you wish to cancel all or part of your order.

For Magazine Subscription cancellations please refer to Can I cancel my subscription?

Booktopia Returns Policy

We understand that from time-to-time you may need to return an item to us.

Before returning any items please contact Booktopia Customer Service Team to discuss your reason for requiring a return and organise an approval to return an item to Booktopia.

Before contacting Booktopia regarding a return please understand the following terms of business:

  1. Booktopia will not pay for postage if you are returning an item because you have changed your mind, or made a mistake in your ordering.
  2. If you have changed your mind, or made a mistake, we require notification within 2 business days of the recorded delivery date.
  3. If you received a faulty or damaged item, we require notification within 2 business days of the recorded delivery date.
  4. If the item you received is not what you ordered, we require notification within 5 business days of the recorded delivery date.
  5. Booktopia is NOT obligated to offer a store credit for products that are returned damaged to our Distribution Centre or never arrive. The Booktopia Distribution Centre address is: Level 1, 27 Sirius Road, Lane Cove West, NSW 2066. To qualify for a credit an item must be returned in perfect condition ready to be resold. Failure to package a returning item properly will undoubtedly result in no store credit and the product will be returned to the customer.
  6. A store credit issued for a return will be for the value of the returned item only. A store credit for a specific item does not cover the cost of postage.

For queries on Magazine Subscriptions please refer to Magazine Frequently Asked Questions.

How to Return an Item

Before returning any items please contact Booktopia Customer Service Team (see Contact Us) to discuss your reason for requiring a return and organise an approval. Refer to Returns Policy

If you are returning an item for a store credit you will require enough packaging and protection e.g. bubble-wrap and cardboard to ensure that contents do not slide around and cause damage or any further damage particularly if this is the reason for the return.

We suggest you keep your Booktopia packaging until you have made contact with the Customer Service Team. We encourage you to re-use the packaging that Booktopia has used to send the item. If you feel that the packaging cannot be reused for whatever reason you will need to provide your own secure and sturdy packaging.

An item being returned must include a note with your Order number and specify the reason for the return, plus detailed information if the return is due to a fault.

Returns Frequently Asked Questions

Can I return and Item if I have changed my mind or I have made a mistake with my order?

Please contact Customer Service Team prior to returning any goods.

We are happy to exchange or issue a store credit on any title provided you have notified us of your intention within 14 days of the recorded delivery date.

Please refer to important information on Booktopia's Returns Policy requirements and How to Return and Item instructions.

What if the item I ordered arrived is faulty or damaged?

Booktopia does pack every parcel with care to ensure it arrives at its destination in the same condition it left our Distribution Centre. Unfortunately a small percentage of packages do arrive damaged due to mishandling by Australia Post employees and contractors as part of their standard parcel delivery program. As Australia Post offers Booktopia customers the most cost-effective and comprehensive delivery program we acknowledge that some parcels may arrive damaged and require replacing.

If your item was faulty or damaged between leaving our Distribution Centre and arriving at your delivery address, you must message Booktopia with your order number and the condition of your item(s) within 2 days of the recorded delivery date.

Booktopia will replace the title, depending on availability once the original title is received back. Refunds will not be processed unless a replacement cannot be provided.

Please read the important information on Booktopia's Returns Policy requirements and How to Return and Item instructions.

What if the item I received is not the item I ordered?

If you receive an item that is not what you ordered, you must message Booktopia with your order number and the missing title/ISBN and received title/ISBN within 2 days of the recorded delivery date.

Booktopia will exchange the title, depending on availability once the original title is received back. Booktopia will provide instructions for returning the item. Refunds will not be processed unless a replacement cannot be provided.

If you are enquiring about a CD, MP3, Audio Cassette, Video or DVD that you have received then please refer to the Booktopia Audio & Visual Policy.

Roughly Cut Pages - Publishers can choose to print books with a Bevelled-Edge. The publishing industry say this style is supposed to give the item an older feel.

The publishers do not inform the distributors or booksellers that a particular title has been produced this way.

There are often no alternative editions of a title produced with a Bevelled-Edge.

Please read the important information on Booktopia's Returns Policy requirements and How to Return and Item instructions.

New Suppliers

Booktopia has been inundated with enquiries and books from authors wishing to supply to Booktopia directly. We feel it is time to outsource to an existing Australian book distributor, as we are not giving the enquiries the proper time or effort required to set up, stock, promote and distribute your titles.

We would like to advise you that Dennis Jones & Associates is very keen to assist you with the distribution of your book(s). We feel Dennis Jones will be an excellent avenue for you into the bookselling arena. They supply many other Australian retailers, including Booktopia. Therefore, in establishing a relationship with Dennis Jones as your Distributor, your titles will be listed on the Booktopia website, via Dennis Jones's data feed and distribution. It will also be great exposure for your titles as Dennis Jones has representatives out on the road promoting titles to physical and online bookstores already and have done so for many years.

Pricing Policy

All prices are listed in Australian dollars and are inclusive of GST. If placing an order from outside Australia you will be charged in your own currency at the conversion rate of your credit card company.

All prices on the Booktopia website are for orders placed via the website only. Orders placed by phone, fax (only for orders not with a Booktopia order number), in person at our office or by mail order will be charged the full RRP prices quoted on the website plus a $10 non-refundable administration fee as they will need to be hand processed by Booktopia staff.

All orders are subject to price and availability confirmation. If we cannot supply the product for the originally advertised price then Booktopia will do one of two things.

If the increase in price is marginal then Booktopia will absorb the increase and proceed with the order and adjust the price on the website after processing your order.

If the price is significantly more then we will not proceed until we have consulted with the customer via the message centre in your Booktopia account and outlined the options. The customer will not be charged for that item until Booktopia has been given confirmation to proceed with the new price. You have 48 hours to respond to the options given to you. If you respond after this time frame, you will be asked to place a new order through the website. If there are other titles on the order that are readily available then they will be automatically ordered, regardless of what percentage of the order they make up.

Booktopia are not obligated to sell a title at the listed price if we are not able to source it from our supplier at the time of ordering as prices may have changed in the interim. In all instances you will be contacted via the message centre in your Booktopia account if there is a change of price and Booktopia will endeavour to find an alternative edition for the same price or discuss the possibility of purchasing the same title at the new price.

We reserve the right to correct any printing errors.

New Suppliers

Booktopia has been inundated with enquiries and books from authors wishing to supply to Booktopia directly. We would like to advise you that Dennis Jones & Associates is very keen to assist you with the distribution of your book(s). We feel Dennis Jones will be an excellent avenue for you into the bookselling arena. They supply many other Australian retailers, including Booktopia. eBooks Frequently Asked Questions

General

What is an eBook?
An eBook is a digital version of a book that can be read on personal computers, tablet computers, many mobile devices, and dedicated eReading devices.
What eBook formats are available on Booktopia?
Depending on the title, the following formats may be available for downloading:

Scanned Pages (PDF)
ePub (flowing text)

If you want to read an e-book offline, your eBook reader device or application must be compatible with both the file format and the DRM format of the e-book. Our ebooks support Adobe DRM.

Which eBook format should I choose?
The format you choose entirely depends on the device or application you intend to use for reading your eBook. ePub or flowing text allows you to reflow text according to screen size and change font size and typeface. If you intend to read your ebooks on ereading devices or smartphones, ePub is recommended.

If you prefer reading original or scanned pages of print version of a book, choose PDF.

Please note the available devices on each ebook's detail page.
How do I find an eBook on Booktopia?
There is an eBook tab at the top of the page listed on all search results and categories if eBooks are available for that search or category. There is also an eBook tab in the book section of the Booktopia website.
What devices can I use to read eBooks purchased at Booktopia?

If you previously bought a Google eBook from Booktopia, you can read it on the Web, Android phones running version 2.1 (Eclair) or later, iPhone, iPad, iPod touch (iOS 3.0 or later), and supported eReaders.

All other eBooks purchased from Booktopia can be read on Android phones running version 2.1 (Eclair) or later, iPhone, iPad, iPod touch (iOS 3.0 or later), personal computer (using Adobe Digital Editions) and supported eReaders.

Can I read an eBook purchased from Booktopia on an Amazon Kindle
No. eBooks purchased from Booktopia (and any other online retailer other than Amazon) CANNOT be read on an Amazon Kindle or Kindle app. You can only read eBooks on the Amazon Kindle from Amazon. Please pay attention to this before purchasing your eBook.
Can I read a sample of the eBook before purchasing it?
For select eBook titles, click the Google Preview graphic on the eBook's details page.
What is ePub?
ePub is the standard eBook format that makes it possible to optimise and customise text and images for both large displays like a desktop computer and small screens like a smartphone. ePub has become popular worldwide. ePub files are also referred as "flowing text".
What is a PDF?
PDF, or Portable Document Format, is the standard format for document interchange created by Adobe. PDF is a file format which presents the book in its original layout and visual formatting. These files are generally larger in size, and the text doesn't adjust to fit the device or computer on which you are reading. And these can be difficult to read on smaller screens. PDF files are also referred as scanned pages.
Why are different eBooks priced differently?
Prices can vary depending on the publisher, the eBook provider, and differing sales agreements. eBooks from most publishers are sold in exactly the same way as printed books.

A few publishers operate according to an "agency model". In this case, the publisher sets the price to the consumer and ALL retailers agree to sell that e-book at that price to the consumer.
Why doesn't this store sell reading devices?
We're experts in books and content not consumer electronics.
Can I share or gift an eBook purchased from Booktopia?

Not at present. Most eBooks are DRM-protected by the publisher and Booktopia does not have control over this protection. Booktopia may offer this service in the future. We recommend that you purchase a gift certificate for the person you want to gift / share with and they can purchase the eBook (please make sure you check what device your friend has, because eBooks purchased from Booktopia are not able to be read on Amazon Kindle hardware or software).

Why do I get a file with the extension .acsm when I try to download certain eBooks?

ACSM files are small downloads that are used by Adobe® Digital Editions to generate an encrypted eBook, which is then downloaded to your personal computer.

Activating Adobe Digital Editions using an Adobe ID - in this case the Booktopia Custom ID - allows you to do more with Adobe eBooks, such as downloading them on multiple computers and transferring them to supported portable devices.

If you click on your eBook in your Bookshelf, and the .acsm file downloads but does not open Adobe Digital Editions that you installed, try double-clicking on the downloaded .acsm file and choosing to open with the Adobe Digital Editions program, or right-clicking and Open With...

When the file opens in Adobe Digital Editions, you will be prompted to Authorise your computer to read the eBook using your Booktopia email address and password. The eBook will then download to your computer and you can read it.

DVD Frequently Asked Questions

General

How should I clean a DVD?
If your DVD is not playing properly, it could be the result of fingerprints or dirt on the disc. Before you try any of these methods to clean it, remember that the disc media is very delicate and you may unintentionally damage the shiny reflective surface if you are not careful.
  • If dust particles are sticking to the CD surface, use a piece of soft cloth to wipe off the dust. To hold the CD, insert a finger or thumb inside the centre hole of the CD or handle it by the edges but never touch the shiny surface.
  • If there are fingerprint marks on the CD surface, dip a soft cloth in Isopropyl Alcohol/Ethanol/Methanol and gently wipe the surface. Never use a petroleum-based solvent like Acetone as that will permanently damage the disc surface.
  • When none of the above alcohol-based products are available, use a bottle of Mineral water to clean the dirty CD surface. Normal tap water has higher concentration of salts that may leave white marks on the disc surface.
  • Always wipe the disc surface in a non-radial back-and-forth motion (from the centre hole to the outer edge). Don't follow the concentric circles while cleaning.

Region Coding

How can I be sure a disc will play on my equipment?
All DVD players bought within Australia and New Zealand (prior to any modification) will have Region 4 set as the default region and many are able to play DVDs from any region.

Therefore, any R4 disc available on Booktopia should be compatible with your player.

All Region 4 discs use the PAL broadcast standard.
What is region coding?
Region coding is designed to ensure discs will only play in certain geographical locations:
  • Region 1: The US, US territories, Canada
  • Region 2: Europe, Japan, Middle East, Egypt, South Africa, Greenland
  • Region 3: Taiwan, Korea, the Philippines, Indonesia, Hong Kong
  • Region 4: Mexico, South America, Central America, Australia, New Zealand, Pacific Islands, Caribbean
  • Region 5: Russia (former USSR), Eastern Europe, India, most of Africa, North Korea, Mongolia
  • Region 6: China
What is Region 0?
Also known as 'Region All' or 'Region Free', Region 0 discs are compatible with any DVD player as they are specifically enabled for all geographical areas.
Why are Region 1 runtimes longer than their Region 4 equivalent?
Due to the nature of PAL and NTSC broadcast standards (see below), PAL titles run approximately 4% quicker than their NTSC counterparts. The longer a film the greater the difference in duration between the two formats, even though the content of the movie may be exactly the same. (You will need an NTSC-compatible TV to view NTSC discs.)
Can I watch DVDs on my PC, Mac or laptop?
All DVD-ROM drives are manufactured with region restrictions, known as Region Protection Control (RPC2). Like DVD players purchased within Australia and New Zealand, local law dictates that DVD-ROM drives available are set to play Region 4 discs as default.

Most computer monitors are easily able to display PAL or NTSC output, but if you use a 'TV-Out' port on your graphics card to pass the signal to a TV set you'll need an NTSC-compatible TV for stable colour playback of NTSC discs.
How do I watch DVDs on my PS2?
You should have no difficulties viewing Region 4 discs with your PS2. Like DVD players purchased within Australia and New Zealand, PS2 consoles purchased here are set to play Region 4 discs as default.
How do I watch DVDs on my Xbox?
To view DVDs on your Xbox console you'll need the Microsoft DVD Movie Playback Kit. Like DVD players purchased within Australia and New Zealand, Xbox consoles purchased here are set to play Region 4 discs as default.

NTSC and PAL

What is NTSC/PAL?
There are three different methods for picture decoding standards: Australia and New Zealand use the PAL system; North America (Region 1) uses the NTSC system and Eastern Europe and France use SECAM.
What will I need to view NTSC discs?
In order for stable colour reproduction during playback, you'll require a NTSC compatible TV, often referred to as a 'multi-standard' or 'world' specification.
How are NTSC and PAL different?
First, NTSC and PAL differ in the number of scan lines available in the vertical axis of the screen; NTSC has 480, PAL has 576.

Secondly, there is a slight variation between NTSC and PAL running speeds. Where conventional film runs at 24 frames per second (fps), a TV signal runs at 30 fps (60 fields) for NTSC, or 25 fps (50 fields) for PAL.

For a PAL display, the simple method when transferring film is to present the film frames at 25 a second instead of 24 (the 4% speedup as mentioned above) and speed up the image to be synchronous with the images. The speedup raises the pitch of available audio tracks by one half of one tone although it's questionable as to whether this is distinguishable by the human ear.

The solution for an NTSC display is to spread the 24 film frames across the 60 video fields by alternating the display of the first film frame for 2 video fields and the next film frame for 3 video fields. This process is referred to as 2-3 pull-down and, again, it's questionable whether this process is noticeable to the human eye.

Neither format is inherently better than the other.

Screen ratios

What is aspect ratio?
Aspect ratio refers to the relative dimensions of the film image (the width-to-height ratio) - there are two standard ratios: fullscreen and widescreen.
What is fullscreen?
This is the typical 'square' image favoured (until recently) by television presentations. This aspect ratio is expressed as 4:3 or 1.33:1, which means that the frame is 1.33 times as wide as it is tall.

Fullscreen presentations fill the entire screen of standard 'square' televisions. If a fullscreen image is viewed on a widescreen television, the screen will be wider than image and black bars will be visible on the right and left sides.
What is widescreen?
Widescreen is the characteristic 'rectangular' image favoured by in most film presentations. There are several aspect ratios that may be called 'widescreen' but the most common are (in order of increasing width) 1.66:1, 1.78:1 (also referred to as 16:9), 1.85:1 and 2.35:1.

If a widescreen image is viewed in on a standard television, the screen will be taller than the image and black bars visible at the top and bottom. The thickness of these bars will depend on the aspect ratio of the widescreen presentation: the wider the aspect ration, the thicker the black bars.
What is letterbox widescreen?
Letterbox widescreen is a method of preserving the rectangular image of a widescreen presentation. Unfortunately, letterboxed presentations (depending on the aspect ratio) do not always reach the sides (left and right) of viewable screen on a widescreen TV set, prompting the need for viewers to use the 16:9 or 'Zoom' feature of their DVD player or TV to expand the image causing a loss of resolution. This issue relates only to widescreen TVs.
What is anamorphic widescreen?
Anamorphic enhancement is a process for widescreen TVs where the original image is compressed by 33% in the vertical axis during encoding. When the player decodes the image, the vertical axis is decompressed giving a higher resolution and greater clarity.

Anamorphically enhanced DVDs can be viewed just as easily on fullscreen TVs as widescreen ones although the process is usually not discernible. PC monitors, despite almost universally being 4:3, have a higher resolution than TV sets and so can display the widescreen image in a window 854x480 pixels or higher for NTSC, 1024x576 or higher for PAL).

Despite a common misunderstanding, the term 'anamorphic' does not ensure that the image will entirely fill the screen of a widescreen TV set.
Why do I still see black bars on my widescreen TV?
Widescreen TVs have an aspect ratio of 1.77:1; the same ratio can be expressed as 16:9. Widescreen presentations with aspect ratios higher than this (i.e. 1.85:1 or 2.35:1, for example) will still show black bars at the top and bottom but will be much smaller than those on a standard 4:3 'square' TV set.

Audio

What is Dolby Digital as a sound format?
Dolby Digital is a system capable of multi channel digital audio, coded using technology previously known as AC-3, often abbreviated as DD.
What is Dolby Digital 1.0 Mono?
A single channel of digital audio. On a surround sound system, the audio stream will be directed through the front centre speaker.
What is Dolby Digital 2.0 Mono?
Somewhat confusingly, this is actually also a single channel of digital audio. The same audio stream is directed to the front left and front right speakers. Very few discs use this format.
What is Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo?
Two channels of digital audio. One stream will be directed to the front left speaker, the other to the front right speaker.
What is Dolby Digital Surround?
Initially known as simply Dolby Surround, this is an audio mixing technique that bolts on a rear channel and a centre channel onto a standard two-channel signal. With a two speaker sound system, these extra channels will be automatically mixed into the audio streams for the left and right speaker
What is Dolby Digital 4.0?
Four channels of digital audio. On a surround sound system the audio streams will be directed to the front left, front right, rear left and rear right speakers.
What is Dolby Digital 4.1?
Four channels of digital audio incorporating an additional low frequency effects channel (denoted by the '.1', this channel is otherwise known as LFE). On a surround sound system the audio streams will be directed to the front left, front right, rear left and rear right speakers with the LFE channel directed to the subwoofer.
What is Dolby Digital 5.1?
Five channels of digital audio incorporating a LFE channel. On a surround sound system the audio streams will be directed to the front left, front right, rear left and rear right speakers, the low frequency channel directed to the subwoofer with dialogue generally confined to the front centre speaker.
What is Dolby Digital 5.1 EX?
Five channels of digital audio incorporating a LFE channel, including support for a rear centre speaker by mixing across sound from the rear left and rear right speakers.
What is Dolby Digital 6.1?
Six channels of digital audio incorporating a LFE channel. This format differs from DD5.1 EX as it provides dedicated support for a rear centre speaker. This format is fully compatible for owners of a traditional 5.1 surround sound system.
What is DTS?
An abbreviation of Digital Theatre Systems, DTS is a rival audio format to Dolby Digital 5.1 and also involves five channels of digital audio incorporating a LFE channel. It differs slightly from DD5.1 by utilising a slightly narrower dynamic range and higher bit-rate audio encoding.
What is DTS ES?
Five channels of DTS digital audio incorporating a LFE channel, including support for a rear centre speaker by mixing across sound from the rear left and rear right speakers.
Can I view a DVD with a Dolby Digital 5.1 audio track if I don't have a surround sound system?
Absolutely. Dolby Digital will automatically downmix the audio streams depending on how many speaker channels are available.
Can I view a DVD with a DTS audio track without a DTS decoder?
Unfortunately not. To benefit from DTS audio you'll require a dedicated decoder in your DVD player, your home cinema amp/receiver, or your TV.

Subtitles

Where can I find which subtitles are available on a DVD?
In the Product Details section of the page for each listing is a field highlighted as 'Subtitles'; here you should find listed all the available subtitles for that DVD.

Please note that for many pre-release products few details regarding subtitles are confirmed by the studio until the release date is very close. Booktopia displays this information on the site as soon as it becomes available.
Subtitles in the language I want are not listed. Why not?
The number and nature of subtitles vary from disc to disc and are entirely the choice of the studio producing that particular DVD. If you can't find the subtitles you're looking for in the 'Subtitles' field of the 'Technical Details' section, chances are they've not been included on the disc.
What are subtitles for the hard of hearing/hearing impaired?
These are subtitles specifically designed for viewers who may have trouble clearly defining particular dialogue or sound when viewing a DVD.

Such subtitles streams not only reproduce dialogue in text on the screen but also give visual clues to sonic events taking place on the screen. For example, if the sound of a telephone can be heard then '[phone rings]' or similar text will be displayed.
What is audio description?
Audio description is the narration of visual representations included on some DVDs to make them accessible to people who are blind or visually impaired. During gaps in dialogue, it describes visual elements such as scenes, settings, actions and costumes.

Blu-ray Frequently Asked Questions

What is Blu-ray Disc?
Blu-ray Disc is a next generation optical media format. Each disc, the same size as a regular DVD, can produce a progressive video image resolution of up to 1920 x 1080 (known as 1080p) for truly stunning visuals. Blu-ray also offers a significantly higher data transfer rate than television HD broadcasts for an improved picture presentation

Currently Blu-ray can store 25GB of data on a single layer, which means that dual layer discs can harbour a potential 50GB of HD content. Regular dual layer DVD is only able to present 9GB of SD content.
What audio formats are available on Blu-ray Disc?
Linear PCM (LPCM): this format offers up to 8 channels of uncompressed audio.

Dolby Digital (DD): this format (formerly known as AC3) is currently used on existing DVDs and offers up to 5.1 channel digital surround sound.

Dolby Digital Plus (DD+): an extension of DD, this format offers increased bitrates and 7.1 channel surround sound.

Dolby TrueHD: this format offers lossless audio encoding of up to 8 discrete channels.

DTS Digital Surround: this format, currently used for some existing DVDs, offers 5.1-channel surround sound at an increased bitrate to Dolby Digital (DD).

DTS-HD: an extension of DTS, this format offers increased bitrates and up to 8 discrete channels.

Please note: although Blu-ray Disc supports all the above formats, it is dependent on the content manufacturer to decide which are included on the release of a particular disc and you may require an additional hardware decoder to access some formats.
Does Blu-ray Disc have Region Coding?
Yes. Blu-ray regions are different to those for DVD and are outlined below.

Introduced by the film studios due to the staggered theatrical release of movies worldwide and to protect exclusive markets, region coding is intended as a method of ensuring discs would be playable only in certain geographical locations.

Region A: North America, South America, East Asia except for China
Region B: Australia, New Zealand, Europe and Africa
Region C: China, Russia and other countries
Can I play Blu-ray Disc on my existing DVD player?
No. To ensure playback you'll need a dedicated Blu-ray player, Sony PlayStation 3 or a BD-Rom drive in your computer.
Can I play DVDs on a Blu-ray player?
Yes. Blu-ray players have been designed to be backwards compatible with regular DVDs so you can continue to enjoy your existing collection. In addition, Blu-ray equipment will allow up-scaling of a DVD image up to a resolution 1080i/1080p so DVDs actually look better on a Blu-ray player than on a DVD player.
Can I play Blu-ray Disc in a HD DVD player?
No. Blu-ray Discs are not compatible with HD DVD machines. Playback of Blu-ray Discs is limited to equipment bearing the Blu-ray Disc logo.
Do I need a new high definition TV to use Blu-ray Disc?
No. Pre-recorded Blu-ray Disc titles will play on any standard definition TV set, even if the video was encoded in High Definition.
How should I clean a Blu-ray disc?
If your Blu-ray disc is not playing properly, it could be the result of fingerprints or dirt on the disc.

Why didn't I receive the gift or promotional product on the newsstand edition with this month's issue?

Publishers generally don't give subscribers the same Gifts with Purchase and promotional items as newsstand purchases as the subscribers are already receiving the magazine at a discount.

Gifts or promotional items are often bulky and won't go through the postal network in the same packaging or without issues. Furthermore gifts and promotional items are limited stock and therefore won't be available due to the time delay between when an order is placed on the Booktopia site and when processed by the publisher.

However, some publishers may still offer gifts or promotional items for subscribers but this isn't information that we receive.

I didn't receive this week/month's issue?

If your magazine hasn't arrived or you think it may be running late please contact Customer Service and we will investigate any issues you may have.

Most queries will require us to contact the distributor and/or the publisher so it may take 24-48 hours (weekdays) before we can provide an update.
