Edward the emu was sick of the zoo,
There was nowhere to go, there was nothing to do,
And compared to the seals that lived right next door,
Well being an emu was frankly a bore.

Tired of his life as an emu, Edward decides to try being something else for a change. He tries swimming with the seals. He spends a day lounging with the lions. He even does a stint slithering with the snakes. But Edward soon discovers that being an emu may be the best thing after all. And so he returns to his pen, only to find a big surprise awaiting him. . . .

Being an emu in the zoo is "frankly a bore," so Edward tries being a seal, a lion and a snake. When he returns home, he finds another emu, and his boredom is ended. Ages 3-6. (May)

Children's Literature - Jeanne K. Pettenati
Edward thinks that emus are boring. So Edward tries life as a seal, until he overhears a visitor at the zoo extolling the virtues of lions. The next day Edward moves on to the lions, until someone praises the snakes. Edward finally realizes that emus are quite special when a visitor (you guessed it) says that his breed is the "best thing at the zoo." A surprise is waiting for him at his den. Both children and adults will enjoy Edward's adventures, which are relayed in verse. The book presents a new spin on the old adage, "beauty is in the eye of the beholder." The rhythm of this story keeps it going strong until the satisfying outcome is reached.
