Wyldcliffe Abbey School for Young Ladies, housed in a Gothic mansion on the bleak northern moors, is elite, expensive, and unwelcoming. When Evie Johnson is torn away from her home by the sea to become the newest scholarship student, she is more isolated than she could have dreamed. Strict teachers, snobbish students, and the oppressive atmosphere of Wyldcliffe leave Evie drowning in loneliness.
Evie's only lifeline is Sebastian, a rebellious, mocking, dangerously attractive young man she meets by chance. As Evie's feelings for Sebastian grow with each secret meeting, she starts to fear that he is hiding something about his past. And she is haunted by glimpses of a strange, ghostly girl—a girl who is so eerily like Evie, she could be a sister. Evie is slowly drawn into a tangled web of past and present that she cannot control. And as the extraordinary, elemental forces of Wyldcliffe rise up like the mighty sea, Evie is faced with an astounding truth about Sebastian, and her own incredible fate.
Gillian Shields's electrifying tale will dazzle readers with suspense, mysticism, and romance.

Comments about Immortal:
This review was first published on Kurt's Frontier.
Evie Johnson is a girl whose life has been turned upside down. She is ripped away from her home by the sea when her grandmother is placed in a nursing home. She is sent to Wyldcliffe Abby School for Young Ladies under a last minute scholarship arrangement. This should be an opportunity of a lifetime. However, the strict teachers, snobbish students, and an oppressive atmosphere leave Evie feeling abandoned.
Evie meets Sebastian who provides her a lifeline to something she is longing for. Then she starts seeing a strange, ghostly girl who could be her twin sister. She is drawn into a web of intrigue and elemental magic that lead her on a quest of self discovery.
Gillian Shields has written an interesting Romantic Urban Fantasy. She makes use of some tried and true fantasy elements. There is protagonist that is thrust into an "upper crust" academic world where she doesn't quite fit in. There is a ghostly love interest that may be friend or foe. Finally elemental magic provides a simple yet sophisticated magical science. Evie is a strong character, but her potential is never fully exploited in the story. She tends to react rather than act. This makes her flat as a character. The story is hard to get into at first but does pick up the pace as one goes on.
