Comments about Stand By Me:
Although set in 1959, this classic coming of age story about four 12 year old friends Gordie (Wil Wheaton), Chris (River Phoenix), Teddy (Corey Feldman) and Vern (Jerry O'Connell), the story is timeless. Narrated by adult Gordie (Richard Dreyfuss), it is a time when the four boys embark on a two day journey to see the rumoured dead body of another 12 year old boy, presumed to be the result of being hit by a train while on the tracks. The motivation for the adventure is the fame and glory they envision to receive when they are adored heroes who found the missing boy's body. Along the way the boys typically tease one another, and also draw strength from one another, while each having their own apprehensions with life. At the journey's climax, the boys have a show down with the group's tormenters - an older youth deliquent gang, also vying for the limelight.
Excellent casting and acting and a supberb 1950s soundtrack. The movie is based on a novella by Stephen King called "The Body". The movie is directed by Rob Reiner and the DVD contains his personal commentary about the film.
