Returning from a two year expedition to the Antartic Dr. Arthur Calgary (Donald Sutherland) searches out Jack Argyle a young hitch-hiker he gave a ride to and who's address book has been in his possession since the day of his departure.
Upon returning to England, Calgary travels to Sunny Point home of the Argyle Family but is shocked to learn that Jack has been executed for the murder of his mother Rachel (Faye Dunaway) and that he was the only alibi for his whereabouts on the night.
Calgary comes forward to the police to clear Jack's name and is surprised to find that neither the police nor Jack's family interested in either clearing his name or finding out the true perpetrator of the crime. Prompted by a sense of personal guilt and justice Arthur sets out to identify the real murderer and to clear the innocent Jack's name.
