Detective Superintendent Sandra Pullman's unconventional team of ex detectives may be eccentric, bend the rules, ignore procedure, follow their hunches and take risks, but they get results. UCOS (the Unsolved Crime and Open Case Squad) has the best clear-up rate in the Force. Series 7 sees them reopening the files on the death of a boxer, the high-profile abduction of a debutante in 1983, a fraudulent businessman, the murder of a celebrated graffiti artist, the abduction and murder of a five-year-old boy, the stabbing of an 80's fashion designer, and the suspicious suicide of a college professor.

Gerry tries to give up smoking (without success), then decides his image could do with an update. An invitation to a school reunion has Pullman wondering whether it's time to face up to her past and she is also forced to confront her half-brother when he seeks her out. Brian is concerned that wife Esther's youthful left-wing leanings might have put them under the gaze of M15 and Jack regrets never having gone to university and decides to do something about it.
