After the resources boom, where is Australia heading?

Australians have just lived through a period of exceptional prosperity, but we can no longer assume that living standards will inevitably keep rising. Commodity prices are dropping and the boom is set to end. Are we ready for the challenges ahead?

In Dog Days, Ross Garnaut explains how we got here, what we can expect in the future, why reform is harder now than in previous decades, and how we can make the tough choices we need to survive the downturn. Are we clever enough – and our leaders brave enough – to change what needs to be changed and accept the need for shared sacrifice?

This is a broad-ranging book about Australia's future by a leading adviser to government and business, someone with a proven record of seeing where Australia is heading. Both forecast and analysis, it heralds a new era for Australia after the boom.

About the Author

Ross Garnaut is a professorial fellow in the faculty of economics and commerce, a vice chancellor's fellow at the University of Melbourne, a distinguished professor of the Australian National University, and a fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences of Australia. He presented the Garnaut Climate Change Review to the Australian Prime Minister in September 2008.

      Comments about Dog Days:

This book should be read by anybody who cares about the future of our country and is willing to think about and understand the insights and analysis of one of our most respected economists. It's not easy or light reading, but the effort is worth it. I liked it so much I bought extra copies to lend to friends. I just hope that the policy advisers in Canberra read it and absorb the messages.

      Comments about Dog Days:

I'm not a frequent reader but this book kept my interest from page 1. Easy to read and understand it is an important book for everyone to read. Makes so many interesting observations without bias about where the economy is heading and what needs to be done. Unfortunately I suspect the people who will read this book will not include those that need to....our politicians particularly those recently elected to Govern.
