A Book of Hours is a collection of Christian prayers for recitation at different hours of the day. Intended for individual use at home, they were simplified versions of the eight periods of daily prayer observed by monks and nuns, from matins in the morning to compline at night. They were written in Latin, the language of the medieval Church.
This exquisite illuminated Book of Hours was written for Margaret of Austria and her husband Alessandro de' Medici, First Duke of Florence. It contains 7 full-page miniatures, 20 illuminated initials decorated with gold paste, gold powder and gold leaf, and more than 200 initials on painted backgrounds.
The manuscript is presented in a double compartment marmot leather box, containing two volumes. The box is lined with vendôme, its cover padded and titled in gold lettering.
This is a rare opportunity for investors, book collectors and libraries to access this significant and beautiful historical document.
