Booktopia Comments

Read John Purcell's review: I'm listening to actor Caroline Lee read Liane Moriarty's novel Big Little Lies as I drive to work. She isn't sitting beside me. I have the audio book. The story revolves around a primary school in a beach suburb of Sydney. Liane's dialogue is so spot on it's creepy. It's like she's been listening at bedroom windows, loitering at school pick ups and memorising the phrases of mums and dads at school fetes. Caroline Lee gets the tone of each of the characters just right, too. Big Little Lies works as a novel, makes for great radio drama and is soon to be a film staring Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon. A huge bestseller in the US, it deserves as big an audience in Oz. John Purcell.

Book Description

'I guess it started with the mothers.'

'It was all just a terrible misunderstanding.'

'I'll tell you exactly why it happened.'

Pirriwee Public's annual school Trivia Night has ended in a shocking riot. A parent is dead.

Liane Moriarty's new novel is funny and heartbreaking, challenging and compassionate. The No. 1 New York Times bestselling author turns her unique gaze on parenting and playground politics, showing us what really goes on behind closed suburban doors.

'Let me be clear. This is not a circus. This is a murder investigation.'

A great story brought to life by characters you feel you already know. A must for parents with children just starting school and good fun for book clubs. Friends are thanking me for recommending this book.

I've been told this is "chicklit". So I don't think it is book club material.

This book was recommended by my sister. Bought a copy asap and was not disappointed. Every time I thought I had solved the mystery there was another twist. This book kept me engaged for the weekend.

This was a great fun read. It was a light page turner and I was sorry when I'd finished it. The day later I was thinking about the deeper subject matter as well.

                    Comments about Big Little Lies:

This book appeals to middle class white women who may be able to relate to the issues and topics of the book. Frankly I found the book boring and flipped through many pages to get to the end only to find a cliched twist that for those of us use to reading lots of books, could see coming. It's a simple writing style with a moving plot so you're engaged in the story but you hit yourself for settling for populist dribble. Of course Nicole Kidman would be interested in producing this as a film- it speaks to her kith and kin.
