An intense high school love story with witchcraft that is quickly winning many fans around the world. Set in the rural American south it has a dark, Gothic atmosphere and a strong paranormal premise that completely absorbs the reader. Told from the perspective of Ethan, his relationship with the Caster, Lena, is beautifully written.

In the end, there is a grave.

Ethan never even saw it coming.

Comments about Beautiful Creatures:
I reveled in this book! Southern charm and decadence oozed from the pages.
The two main characters, Ethan Wate, who possesses an elegant gentlemanly style to win over Lena Duchannes, a dramatic (and very emo) newcomer to his High School in Galveston.
The only negative thing I'll say about Ethan is that he felt a little too good to be true, always appearing to be sure of his convictions and was the rock to Lena's storm (sometimes literally) of emotions. Meanwhile, Lena was everything you want from an outsider: reserved and secretive, difficult to get to know, brooding and emotional. Her angst and dramatic flair really make Ethan work to become a part of her world.
The storyline has a quickened pace and flourished along with Ethan and Lena's romance. Many scenes depicted in the novel have an epic and grandiose feel, and truly build a colourful setting for the Caster mythology. But it's not all fluffy bunnies and love hearts - there is a darkness in the tone of this story, making it an enthralling read. All these elements had me rooting for the main characters right to the end. I also thought the climax and following conclusion of this first in a series happened rather quickly, however, ultimately satisfying. Definitely one of the best reads this year by far.
The book was, and was not predictable – there were some elements you could see coming a mile away, and others which had me re-reading to make sure the bomb that was just dropped wasn't my overactive imagination.
I'd definitely recommend this book, beautifully written, charismatic romance and epic magical battles. Can't wait to get hooked in to the rest of the series.
