The Newtown Tigers are the unluckiest team in the history of football. Can anybody turn their luck around?

About the Author

Michael Wagner is a children's author whose best-known books follow the funny and action-packed sporting adventures of Maxx Rumble, and the hilarious father-son rivalries of The Undys. He is also author of the novel Dog Wars, and the Aussie Nibble: Newtown Tigers. Prior to becoming a children's author, Michael played in a band that almost became famous, spent ten years working as a radio broadcaster with the ABC, wrote and produced award-winning animation for television, and wrote and performed comedy. Michael lives with his wife, Jane Godwin (who is a proper children's author), and his two children, Will and Lizzie (who think their Dad is really cool). Michael's latest book, Destiny's Right Hand, was published by Puffin Books in 2010.

About the illustrator

Gregory Rogers has illustrated more than forty picture books, including Tracks and Lucy's Bay by Gary Crew, and Way Home by Libby Hathorn. In 1995 he won the Kate Greenaway Medal for Way Home, becoming the first Australian illustrator ever to have won this prestigious British award. His first wordless picture book The Boy, the Bear, the Baron, the Bard was selected as one of the Ten Best Illustrated Picture Books of 2004 by the New York Times and short-listed for the CBCA Awards (Younger Readers) in 2005.

Chapter One

I couldn't believe it. We were up by eight goals with just two minutes to go. We were finally going to win!

We might have lost eighteen games in a row, but nothing could stop the Newtown Tigers now.

The ball was up the other end of the ground, and I was ready to start celebrating the victory we were about to have. I called out to our coach, 'Can I have a drink, Mr Trott?'

Mr Trott didn't hear me. He was busy on the sidelines - having a nap. He was a very relaxed coach. His five-year-old daughter, Isabella, grabbed a couple of water bottles and sprinted onto the field.

I aimed my bottle at our rover, Joshua Lewis, and gave it a good squirt. It was a perfect shot. I got him right in the ear hole.

'You may be our captain, Riley O'Riley,' said Joshua, snatching the bottle from my hands, 'but you're about to get an earful!'

I backed away from Joshua and bumped into our ruckman, Tommy Taylor. Isabella had given him a water bottle too. He and Joshua chased me. They both squirted me one in each ear hole.

As I shook the water out of my ears, I heard the umpire's whistle.

Suddenly the game stopped. I ran to our backline to see what was going on.

I couldn't believe it. The footy was stuck on the goal post. It was right up the top, sitting in a bird's nest!

'We'll get it down, ump!' I yelled.

All of us Newtown Tigers wobbled the goal post as hard as we could. We had so much fun that we snapped it in two! We cracked up laughing until the umpire shouted, 'Game over. It's a draw!'

'But we're up by eight goals!' I protested.

'We can't finish the game with a broken goal post, Riley,' explained the umpire. 'We have to call it a draw.'

I groaned. Nothing ever went right for the Newtown Tigers. We were the unluckiest team in the history of football.
