A mystery woman arrives at the workhouse and dies giving birth to a son. He is named Oliver Twist. Destined for a life of drudgery Oliver is sent to work for the undertaker, Mr Sowerberry and his vindictive son Noah. Bullied unmercifully by the horrible Noah, Oliver runs away to London where he stumbles into the hands of a gang of juvenile pickpockets led by the Artful Dodger and their criminal trainer, the elderly and unscrupulous Fagin. But Fate takes a hand and following a burglary, Oliver finds himself in the home of Mr Brownlow, a kindly old gentleman, who cares for and takes an interest in the boy. His happiness is cut short as Fagin and his cronies seek to retrieve Oliver.
